SIWES 2026: How to Get a Tech Internship at a Real Software Company (Not Just "Help with Printing")
A frank guide for Nigerian CS students on how to secure a meaningful SIWES placement at a genuine tech company — what to look for, what to avoid, and how to make the most of your industrial training.
The Hard Truth About SIWES Placements in Nigeria
Every year, tens of thousands of Nigerian computer science and software engineering students go through the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES). And every year, a significant number end up at companies where they do zero engineering work — helping with photocopying, data entry, or just "shadowing" staff.
This is a waste of your most critical learning period. Here's how to do it right.
What a Good SIWES Placement Looks Like
A legitimate tech SIWES placement should include:
✅ Working on real codebases — not toy projects, actual production or client code
✅ Mentorship from a senior developer — at least 2–3 hours per week of code review
✅ Learning modern tools — Git, VS Code, CI/CD, proper frameworks (not just Notepad++ and HTML5)
✅ A stipend — any legitimate tech company should pay their interns, even ₦30,000/month minimum
✅ A structured curriculum — you should know what you'll learn each month
✅ A portfolio deliverable — at minimum, a real feature or project you can show employers
Red Flags to Avoid
❌ "We'll teach you Photoshop and typing" (not a tech company)
❌ No code written in the first two weeks
❌ No internet access or GitHub accounts provided
❌ No senior developer assigned to supervise you
❌ The company has no products, clients, or live software

Tips for Making the Most of Your Placement
- Come with a portfolio — even a simple GitHub profile shows initiative
- Ask for real tasks on day one — don't wait to be assigned busywork
- Learn version control immediately — Git is non-negotiable in any real tech environment
- Document your work — maintain a daily/weekly learning log
- Ask to deploy something — the most valuable experience is seeing your code live in production
You can read the full programme structure and submit your application on our dedicated SIWES & IT Internship page.
SIWES at the right company will fast-track your career by 2–3 years compared to a bad placement. Choose wisely.
